ASL 1000 - Deaf Studies/Culture

This course is designed to introduce and help students understand the Deaf community as a linguistic and cultural minority group. The role of Deaf people in the larger society, political activism, laws, access to information, educational philosophies and methods, and communication systems will be introduced. Students will learn the differences between Deaf; deaf, late-deaf, oral deaf, and hard of hearing. The course also examines the historical treatment of deaf people as well as educational influences, causes, and treatment of deafness. Students will learn about sign interpreters, oral interpreters, and transliterators and how to hire an interpreter.
